Virginia Porter

Founding Regent

Organizing Regent Virginia Porter, began the Appalachian Trail Chapter NSDAR 65 years ago with all the patriotism and fervor one could have during the time following  World War II. In their ritual, they recited the Preamble to the Constitution. "It is wonderful that we can help keep alive the ideals of a great group of strong-minded women who stepped forth to start our chapter." Virginia Porter was a well-educated leader who belonged to the Wilderness Road Chapter NSDAR and believed that there were enough ladies in the Hillsville area to start a new chapter there. Virginia Porter grew up in Ashe County, North Carolina, and taught school in Carroll County. She was a member of the Hillsville Presbyterian Church where she taught Sunday School and was a leader of many church programs. She was the state president of the Medical Auxiliary and organized a local chapter in Hillsville, Virginia. She served a term as regent in addition to organizing regent and later served as a state and national president of the Dames of the Court of Honor.
